(Student Profile)

Sarah Perryman

What made you want to go into this area of study?
I had always planned on going to graduate school. Though I initially considered studying Publishing or PR, I ended up deciding that an MA in Multimedia Journalism both suited my interests better and would afford me more versatile skills in the long run.

Why did you choose to study at Kent?
Honestly, Kent wasn’t my first choice until I interviewed with Tim Luckhurst. Before my interview, I was pretty sure I wanted to go to University of Sussex, but once I spoke with Tim I couldn’t see myself anywhere else. I was so impressed that he not only took the time to answer all of my questions, but he also gave me a tour of the campus and showed me the resources that Kent has to offer. To me, it seemed like a great sign of a supportive culture within the faculty. I wasn’t wrong — they’re fantastic.
What are you particularly enjoying about your studies here?
How much I’ve learned. Almost everything that we’ve covered in classes has been entirely new to me, so I feel as though I’m not just re-hashing things I studied previously. I love that we are being taught to use programs like Adobe Creative Suite and have been put in real-life situations, like on news days, where we are expected to put together a radio program or newspaper in four hours.

Which modules have you enjoyed the most so far, and why?
Practical Multimedia Journalism, because playing with Audition, InDesign, and Photoshop is fun. I also really enjoy Media Law, but that’s because I’m a bit of a judicial nerd.

What about the teaching?
I couldn’t ask for better professors. They are all so passionate and so willing to help you achieve your goals. They ask a lot of you, but they are also understanding of how demanding the course is.

What are the facilities like in the Centre for Journalism and on campus generally?
Wonderful, so far I’ve never had an issue because of lack of resources. Between the newsroom and the library, we have everything we need.

What is the level of support like here for postgraduates?
As I mentioned before, the culture of support at Kent is one of the main reasons that I chose this university. The professors are always willing to help and librarians are also very helpful for research questions and offer program tutorials.
